FW23 - STYGNEN KLÄR MIN KROPP
Julia Norén Studio FW23
Clothing collection inspired by traditional Swedish and Japanese clothes.
All cow leather used in this collection is naturally tanned and locally produced from Tärnsjö garveri, Sweden. The sheep skin is naturally tanned from Sweden.
Other materials used are silk, wool, cotton, tree, brass, metal and viscose.
Cut, stitched, and painted by hand in Sweden
Leather can be produced in a respectful and durable manner, where both the environment and the animals are held in high regard.
But just like cows slaughtered in cold blood for their skin and the money, in historic and modern times women have risked their lives and sacrificed their own skin either by prostitution, arranged marriage or because their gender makes them more fragile, weak and controllable due to society's structures.
In hommage to the animals, women and handicraft, leather and wool are central materials in this collection.
I am eternally grateful to inherit the scars of these animals and women. I carefully use the cow hides in a creative manner to create sustainable bags, goods and garnments that will last longer than a lifetime. And i am humbled and inspired by the story of a women’s worth told through her clothes, a message that will last over many lifetimes
To symbolize the power of the female body and acknowledge the worth of a woman, I have made a black bridal crown, in Swedish called “horkrona” (meaning whore-crown). It was put on the head of a bride who was not a virgin at the wedding, to show everyone she was a disgraced bride.
Beauty, virginity, obedience have been communicated through women’s clothing through history.
This ritual, slaughter of souls, female surrender teaches me the high female value, the power running in her blood, and the importance of the stories that we wear.
Clothing is communication,
create a story worth sharing.
